What is Cinemathèque?

Cinematheque is the premier screening series of the Department of Film and Television. It is a series of screenings of important, innovative films and television programs and of meetings and conversations with film- and television-makers. All undergraduate and graduate FTV students are required to attend a minimum of two Cinematheque events during each of the Fall and Spring semesters.

Events are FREE to BU students, staff and the general public as well. Screenings are Friday evenings at 7 p.m. in COM at 640 Commonwealth Ave., Room 101.

About the Curator

The BU Cinematheque curator is Gerald Peary, a cinema professor at Suffolk University and a long-time film critic for the Boston Phoenix. He chooses his BU programs based on his extensive contacts in the professional film world and from his travels to film festivals around the globe, including, annually, Cannes, Toronto, Montreal and South by Southwest. January 31-AN EVENING WITH MAUREEN BHAROOCHA.– A BU Com MFA , Bharoocha is an LA-based independent  filmmaker and a long-time segment director for Jimmy Kimmel Live! At BU, she will talk about working in late-night television and show a medley of her comic “Sprinkles Shorts” made for Jimmy Kimmel.

February 28-AN EVENING WITH LINDA REISMAN -Linda Reisman will be presenting her most recent film Leave No Trace, which premiered at Sundance and Cannes festivals. This haunting film was directed and written by Debra Granik and is a moody, mysterious, and mesmerizing exploration of an unexpected existence on the edge. A teenage girl (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie) and her father (Ben Foster) have lived undetected for years in Forest Park, a vast woods on the edge of Portland, Oregon. A chance encounter leads to their discovery and removal from the park and into the charge of a social service agency. They try to adapt to their new surroundings, until a sudden decision sets them on a perilous journey into the wilderness. Based on the novel, My Abandonment by Peter Rock.

April 10-AN EVENING WITH LOGAN TAYLOR.- A BU Com graduate, Taylor lives in Austin, Texas, and works as a film festival programmer for SXSW, the Fantastic Fest, and the Boston Underground Film Festival. She will discuss the programming profession and present a genre-bending feature film of her discovery and championing: Zach Gaynes’s eccentric, female-centric Homewrecker.

April 24-AN EVENING WITH LARRY KARAZEWSKI.– A legendary Hollywood screenwriter, Karazewski wrote, among many credits, Man on the Moon, the Andy Kaufman story starring Jim Carrey, and in 2019, Dolemite is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy. At BU, Karazewski will show his most beloved work, Ed Wood, Tim Burton’s screwball bio of the lunatic “B” movie director, featuring Johnny Depp.
