PhD in Emerging Media Studies
- The application for fall 2020 is open. Application review began December 15 and continues until the desired cohort size has been reached.
All Master’s Programs
- Priority deadline: February 1, 2020 Apply by this deadline for priority scholarship consideration. Students who apply by this deadline will receive their admissions decision in time to attend our Accepted Students Open House in March (should they be accepted).
- Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until our final deadline: May 1, 2020 or when the desired cohort size is reached for certain programs (some programs may fill prior to May 1 – we will update that information here). We encourage you to submit your application well before the May 1 deadline.
Application Requirements
Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of $95. The application fee is an application processing fee, not an application consideration fee. If you think you qualify for an application fee waiver, you can apply for one on this page.
Transcripts
We require a copy of your transcript to be uploaded within our online application. In addition, we require all transcripts from colleges and/or universities attended that count toward any degree (beyond high school). A college senior should submit an official report of work completed in the first semester of the senior year as soon as it is available. All transcripts must be in English or an official translation. If you are admitted and decide to enroll, we will ask for an official copy at that time.
Students admitted into a graduate program in the College of Communication should normally have completed a Bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution prior to matriculation into the program.
Letters of Recommendation
We require three letters of recommendation written by people who know you well and who can speak to your academic and/or professional backgrounds. These letters of recommendation must be sent online via our application service.
International Applicants
International students must fulfill additional requirements to be considered for admission. Please review our International Student admissions requirements before applying.

We require the most up to date resume or CV for all applicants.

For programs requiring the GRE, BU alumni who have graduated prior to January 2019 will be required to take the GRE (with the exception of Public Relations and Emerging Media Studies – see caveats below*).
For Boston University Undergraduates graduating in September 2020, all requirements for graduation must be completed by the end of Summer II, 2020.
*Note about GRE Requirement for MS in Public Relations applicants:
The GRE will be waived for applicants to the Public Relations program who have the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have graduated/will graduate from an accredited Bachelor’s degree program at a U.S.-located university. All other applicants to the MS in Public Relations program are required to take the GRE.

India’s Common Admission Test (CAT)
We will accept India’s CAT scores (results declared in January 2018, 2019, or 2020) in place of the GRE and GMAT for the following programs:
- Master of Science in Public Relations
- Master of Science in Marketing Communication Research
- Master of Science in Media Ventures*

Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
Applicants to the MS in Media Science: Marketing Communication Research concentration may take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) in place of the GRE.
Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Students who received their undergraduate degree from a non-English speaking institution must also take the TOEFL iBT or IELTS. Applicants must receive a minimum score of 100 (TOEFL iBT) or 7.0 (IELTS) for their application to be reviewed. We must receive an official score by our deadline; we recommend taking your TOEFL/IELTS at least 20 days prior to our deadline to assure that we receive the score.
This year, we will not accept scores compiled from multiple tests or the MyBest Score feature to meet the total score of 100 or above for proof of English proficiency.
Our TOEFL code is 3087.
Program Specific Requirements
In most programs, applicants are not required to have experience in communication industries or in the academic areas of the department concerned. Please contact COM Graduate Affairs if you have any questions.

Advertising Requirements
Personal Statement
Write an essay, in 500-750 words, that addresses the following:
If you are coming from a related undergraduate major, what drives you to further your studies in advertising? If you are coming from an unrelated undergraduate major, what is the reason for your change in direction to go into advertising?
In addition, and if available, please feel free to include a link to your website, blog, etc. that showcases your creativity or management experience.

Film & Television Studies Requirements
Personal Statement
Tell us about yourself and your experiences with film and television studies. What are your main areas of interest? Who among the Film and Television Studies faculty performs research that aligns with your interests? What would you like to do with your master’s degree? Your statement should be no longer than 750 words.
Academic Writing Sample
Submit two academic writing samples, each of at least 750 words in length. The samples should be essays actually submitted to recent arts or humanities courses. Ideally, the samples should be originals or clear photocopies of the actual papers that were turned in, showing the course numbers and names of the instructors, the dates of submission, instructors’ comments in the text and margins, and the grades the papers received.
If the originals or clear copies of the papers are not available, newly printed-out copies of the papers are acceptable. Write on the first page the course name, teacher’s name, date, and grade the paper received (if remembered). If neither originals nor photocopies nor new print-outs of papers from the past five years are available, applicants may submit two newly written essays of 750–1,000 word length. In either case, the essays need not be about film or television.
Discussions of any work of art, artistic movement, or issue in literature, drama, painting, sculpture, television or film are equally acceptable. Do not submit informal, non-academic samples, such as blog posts or movie reviews. (Note to international applicants: both essays should be submitted in the English language, but the translation, if necessary, should be done by the candidate.) No one else is allowed to assist in the preparation or correction of the writing samples submitted.

Journalism Requirements
Personal Statement
Students in the Master’s Program in Journalism are required to construct, develop, and deliver clear, concise stories to a variety of audiences. Therefore, strong writing skills are crucial for admission into the program.
Please write a story that identifies and describes a moment of truth in your life so far. This does not have to be related to journalism, academics, or your career. We are interested in learning about you through a well-written, real-life story about a moment that was important to you.

International Applicants (non-US citizens): Video Requirement

Media Science: Marketing Communication Research Requirements
Personal Statement

Our concentration in Marketing Communication Research trains students for jobs in the marketing research/consumer insights industry.
Write an essay, in your own words, that explains how companies, organizations, government agencies, etc. can benefit from marketing communication research. In the second half of your essay, please provide a real-life or theoretical example of a marketing research project and tell us how knowledge gained through such a project helped or can help a client.
Please cite/reference any outside sources utilized while writing this essay.

In a 2017 Times Higher Education Blog, Louise Byrne wrote, “Today, more than at any time since the invention of the first truly mass communication technology in the early 20th century, media are having a profound effect on our social, political, and economic lives. As a result, media studies frequently take an interdisciplinary approach to its enquiry, embracing politics, economics, and psychology, as well as law and ethics.”
Please write a response to this quotation that does not exceed 750 words. Offer an argument that challenges, agrees with, or modifies Byrne’s claim. You must support your position with evidence from outside sources. You must cite your sources accurately and correctly in the text of your essay and in a works cited/reference list using an accepted style guide format (e.g. APA Style, MLA Style, Chicago Style, etc.). The works cited/reference list does not count in your overall word count. Your argument must be your own original writing and thought.

Case Study
Everyone is familiar with companies such as Apple, Snapchat, Facebook, and Google and recognize the innovations these brands have made in shaping how consumers create, share, and consume content. However, in all parts of the world, other companies and innovators are also creating meaningful innovations in media, technology, and communication, but perhaps are lesser known.
We’d like to hear from you about a company, brand, or individual that you believe is making an impact by bringing together content and technology in ways that are important. Describe what the company is doing and how it is using technology and content to position itself as a leader to better serve its audience and customers or community. How is it innovating and making a difference? How is the company giving itself a competitive advantage within its market segment or, if you’ve chosen a non-profit, how are they creating impact within the community? Limited to 1000 words.

Public Relations Requirements
Personal Statement

The last decade has seen the rise of social media and the decline of traditional news sources. According to Rebekah Iliff, Chief Strategy Officer for AirPR (2014), “the implications of technology and other various drivers (the economic downturn and self-publishing, for example) have affected PR in ways that have yet to fully be discovered.”
Option A: Please read the quote above and write an essay that explains how you see public relations changing in the face of these and other trends and what public relations professionals can do to adapt. We recommend that you use outside sources, as well as personal insight and experience, to support your argument.
Option B: Please read the quote above and identify and describe a public relations campaign or crisis within the corporate or nonprofit sector that attempts to adapt to the new landscape/environment. Please explain how you would have improved the campaign or effectively managed the crisis. Two Fictional Writing Samples
Submit two samples of your fiction writing. They may be a portion of a screenplay, a short story, a play, or a portion of a novel (a screenplay or a teleplay is preferred). The combined length of both samples should be no more than 20 pages. (Please do not include more than two samples. Original works are preferred.)

Television Requirements
The GRE is not required for the Television program.
TV Producing/Management Concentration
Personal Statement: Tell us about yourself and your experiences with television. Why do you think you’ll succeed in the BU graduate program and beyond? Your statement should be no longer than 750 words and double-spaced.
Writing Sample: Name three American TV shows, each from a different TV genre, and then tell how those shows reveal interesting trends in American society. In other words, choose a TV comedy, a TV drama, reality program, or talk show. Then name the network which carries the program (that network could be a traditional network, cable program, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc.. You choose.). The point is to look at current TV programs so you can write about their connection to what is actually going on in America. Your response should be no longer than 750 words and double-spaced.
Optional Writing Sample: If Producing/Management students wish to take the Television/Writing electives (FT522, FT512, or FT514), they are required to submit a short writing sample. This is not a required component and does not have any impact on your admission status (only on your ability to take to writing electives).
Please select an American situation comedy series or dramatic series that is currently being aired with original episodes. Create an original storyline for this series. Write no more than three pages of dialogue for a scene in the story you created. You are only required to submit the three pages of dialogue for the scene, not the entire story. On the top of your submission, write your name, the title of the series that you are submitting, and a one-sentence logline. (A logline is a one-sentence description of your series episode storyline.)
It is also possible, based upon your writing sample, that you may be required to have a Skype conversation with a television professor. This will not apply to all applicants.
