The BU Alumni Education office sponsored a talk Tuesday, October 13 by COM Professor Lou Ureneck about the destruction of the city of Smyrna in 1922 and the first genocide of the 20th Century. Relating the story that he tells in his book, The Great Fire, Ureneck explained how a 10-year religious cleansing in Asia Minor, beginning in 1912, culminated in a massacre in the liberal and tolerant city of Smyrna, the richest and most sophisticated city of the Eastern Mediterranean. His book was published this year by HarperCollins. The event was held at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown.
