First Weeks
As you get settled into your role here at the University, we invite you to continue connecting with the campus.
Enroll in your Benefits
You must enroll in any benefits, such as health/dental insurance, within 30 days of orientation or your date of hire, whichever is later. You can review our benefits through the Benefits Education Center and make your enrollment elections through the BUworks BU Benefits Center.
*Please note, if you do not enroll during your new hire enrollment period, your next opportunity will be during Open Enrollment or a Qualified Life Event.
Life@BU
As a member of the BU community, you can take advantage of all the perks, discounts, and resources we have to offer our employees. We encourage you to visit the “Life@BU” page to find more ways to save, have fun, and connect with the BU community.
Make Connections
As a new employee, it is vital to start building relationships within your organization. Making connections helps you feel like part of the team, fosters effective communication, and opens doors to valuable insights and opportunities for growth. One great way to connect to the community is to visit our Faculty & Staff Community Networks page.
We also encourage you to attend a Campus Connects session, where you will learn more about owning your onboarding and have the opportunity to connect with other new employees, and meet representatives from various University offices.
Set Goals
It is essential to define what you want to achieve during your onboarding journey. Setting goals ensures that you understand your role, remain focused, and contribute to the University’s success while fostering accountability and personal growth. Ways to set effective goals are:
- Follow the SMART criteria: make them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Identify what you want to achieve, measure progress, ensure it is realistic, align it with your objectives, and set a clear timeframe for accomplishment.
- Need further help setting goals? Check out our Organizational Development & Learning team’s 10-minute SMART Goals course.
- Utilize Microsoft Planner: this planning tool streamlines task management, promotes collaboration, and ensure seamless project tracking.
- Use a Goal Tracking Guide to effectively track your progress and maintain your goals.
